What is PCIT?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is meant to help improve your child’s behavior and your relationship with your child. This happens over the two parts of PCIT treatment. The first part is called Child-Directed Interaction (CDI). CDI will show you how to pay attention to your child when he is behaving in ways that you want to see more often. For example, let’s say your child has a problem with hitting others. In this case, you will be taught how to compliment your child whenever you see him using gentle hands or keeping his hands to himself. Giving positive attention to your child for his good behaviors will make him try to please you. This means that he will show you those good behaviors more often. You will also learn how to ignore your child when he is doing things that you don’t want him to do. Examples of behaviors you don’t want can include temper tantrums, interrupting, or whining. You will be taught a new way to ignore these unwanted behaviors. Ignoring these behaviors will make them happen less or even go away completely!

Once you are comfortable with and good at using the very important CDI skills, you may move on to the second part of PCIT, called Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI). It is important for families to first be comfortable with CDI before moving on to PDI. This is because CDI helps make the PDI part of treatment go well. So it is important that you practice the CDI skills regularly with your child before you attempt to try the PDI skills related to discipline. During PDI, you will learn how to use effective discipline that teaches your child to obey you and behave better. Like a lot of parents, you may have tried many things to improve your child’s behaviors. During PDI, you will learn some new methods of good discipline that really work. PDI will help your child follow your directions quickly and calmly. We hope that you will commit to using Pocket PCIT Online over the next four weeks and regularly practicing the skills with your child during this time. Your results for your family will likely depend on how much you practice the skills that you are going to learn at home.

Pocket PCIT Online consists of information adapted from the Parent - Child Interaction Therapy program developed by Dr. Sheila Eyberg. Pocket PCIT Online uses specific parenting strategies you can use in teaching your child to act respectfully and cooperatively with you and others. It is designed for parents coping with the normal behavior problems of young children. The parenting skills you will be taught are divided into two main sections, called Child - Directed Interaction (CDI) and Parent - Directed Interaction (PDI). The CDI section describes play therapy skills that you will use to enhance positive interactions between you and your child and to reduce negative attention seeking behaviors (such as back talk or bossy behavior). The PDI section teaches a specific discipline technique you can use if your child needs to learn to mind you better.
